Can you relocate an olive tree?

Olive trees thrive in Mediterranean climates, but are considered invasive in some areas of the country. Although an olive tree (Olea europaea) of any age and size can be successfully transplanted, the larger the tree, the more difficult and expensive it will be.

How do you transplant a mature olive tree?

Trim off broken or damaged roots and cut through roots that circle around the inner side of the pot. Look for rotting roots, which will be soft and brown, and trim them off. If you don’t want your tree to grow any larger, you can pot it back into the same pot.

When can I transplant an olive tree?

Olive trees are best transplanted in the fall, when soil and air temperatures are still warm, so the roots can become established.

Do olive trees have deep roots?

While other trees send their roots deep into the ground, olive trees feature shallow root systems. This allows olive roots to collect water from soil that typically dries fast, ensuring the tree gets enough moisture to stay hydrated. While shallow root systems get water faster, they can also become exposed more easily.

Should you prune a tree after transplanting?

Pruning after planting should be limited to removing dead, rubbing, or broken branches only. Wait at least a year before removing any larger limbs or shaping the structure of the tree or shrub. Remember, pruning encourages growth, so cut only where you need growth, and try to maintain the natural shape of the plant.

Should you prune olive trees in pots?

Potted olive trees prefer light pruning yearly instead of severe pruning every two or three years. Remove branches that have grown from the foot of the tree or along the trunk.

How far from a house should an olive tree be planted?

Ordinarily, patios will not be a problem because the soil beneath them will be dry and compacted. Therefore, the roots will not grow into this area as much. It’s still recommended, however, that you plant at least 8-10′ away from patios, water pipes and sewer pipes.

How deep do olive roots go?

Under ideal soil and moisture conditions, roots have been observed to grow to more than 20 feet (6 meters) deep.

What’s the best way to transplant an olive tree?

Dig a hole for the olive tree that is as deep and twice as wide as the root ball. Set the tree in the hole and spread out the roots. Water the roots again. Fill the hole with soil, tamping down lightly with your foot. Water the soil once more, so the roots are thoroughly soaked.

What should I do after transplanting my tea olive?

After transplanting feed the plant with a solution of Root Stimulator. This will help to stimulate root development. There’s never any guarantees with transplanting but if done properly there should be a good chance your plant will survive. Good luck!

How do you remove an olive tree from a pot?

Remove the tree from the pot, either by cutting the pot away from the roots or by holding one hand over the top of the pot, turning it over and gently shaking it to release it. Handle the tree by its root ball, not by the main stem.

How often do you need to check olive tree roots?

Newly planted olive trees require a moist root ball for at least the first 90 days. Check the moisture content of the roots once a week using a soil moisture meter or probe, angling the probe inward toward the root ball when inserted into the soil.

How to take an olive tree out of the pot?

Remove the pot and upright the tree, supporting it by the bottom of the root ball. Never tear apart the roots or wash the potting medium out of the root ball. Have the new home ready before taking your tree out of its pot.
