Do old turntables have preamps?

Some turntables have a preamp built-in. Some older amplifiers and stereo systems also have preamps built-in (look for inputs marked PHONO). DJ mixers function as a preamp. If you do need an external preamp, you will need a set of cables (usually RCA cables) to connect to your audio system.

Do I need an amplifier if my turntable has a preamp?

Yes. A turntable must be connected to an amplifier as the output signal is not strong enough to drive speakers. So if you have a turntable with a built-in preamp and also have speakers with a built-in amplifier, then you connect the two without the standalone amplifier.

Do you need a preamp for a turntable with powered speakers?

Most powered speakers still require a separate phono pre-amp. In any case, internal amplification and the built-in phono pre-amp eliminate the need for two separate components – a receiver and discrete phono pre-amp. Put a record on and enjoy!

What is the difference between an amplifier and a preamplifier?

The basic difference is this: a preamp boosts a weaker signal to line level, while an amplifier boosts a line level signal so that it can be sent to speakers.

Do you need a speaker with a turntable?

Turntables. Turntables need an external amplifier and speakers to play records. They usually offer much higher sound quality than record players with the speakers built-in. But turntables won’t be as compact, cute, and affordable as record players.

What’s the difference between a preamp and an amplifier?

Do you need a pre amp for a turntable?

Serious amplifiers, and a rapidly growing number of cheaper amplifiers, have them. Less serious amplifiers and all-in-one stereos usually don’t. If you have a “phono” input, plug your turntable in there – you won’t need a phono pre-amp.

Do you need a phono stage on a turntable?

Most new models of receivers and amps don’t come with a built-in phono preamp, but they may have a label that says phono anyway. Another way to determine whether or not your model has a phono stage is to plug in your record player and try turning up the volume.

What kind of input do I need for a turntable?

And from there, we need to connect the output from the turntable with built-in preamp or the output from the standalone preamp to one of the available LINE-level inputs on the receiver. It can be AUX, DVD, CD, TAPE, TUNER or any other LINE-level input that is available on your receiver.

Can a vintage turntable work with a Bluetooth speaker?

Most newer stereo gear, including soundbars, mini-systems, Bluetooth speakers, home theatre receivers, etc. do NOT have phono inputs. To use a vintage turntable with these newer units the turntable signal must pass through an external phono preamp.
