Does a turntable need to be grounded?

Turntables that do not have a built-in preamp need grounding. Turntables that need grounding feature a cable that needs to be attached to your preamp (whether it’s an external preamp, mixer, amplifier). Turntables that are not grounded will produce an obvious humming sound.

How do you ground a turntable to a receiver?

All you have to do is plug your turntable’s audio signal cable into the receiver’s phono input. Just below the phono input is a metal post labeled “GND”, for ground. Connect your turntable’s ground wire (if it has one) to this post.

How do you ground a turntable without a ground wire?

Then attach one end of the wire to the chassis of the amplifier, NOT to a speaker terminal, but rather to a shiny screw in the bottom of amp. Then take the other end of wire and attach it to a shiny screw in the metal chassis of the turntable.

How do you ground a phono preamp?

If this has no ground connector, then you can ground the turntable by simply placing the ground wire/connector under a screw on the back of the mini system. Loosen off a screw enough to fit the wire/fork under it and tighten it back up. Make sure to disconnect power first, of course.

Do you need to ground a turntable with built in preamp?

The only thing that makes a difference in whether you actually have to ground your turntable, is if you have an amplifier with a built in phonos preamp. To avoid that hum emanating from your turntable, you need to ground it correctly to your amplifier.

What if I dont ground my turntable?

This particular Ground is not a safety issue, it’s there to avoid a Ground Loop. If you have inter-connected equipment, of any kind, with more than one electrical path to the Ground, a Ground Loop can ultimately cause extra noise. A turntable suffering from a Ground Loop will produce a hum through your speakers.

What happens if you dont ground your turntable?

Can I use speaker wire to ground my turntable?

As long you you make a good connection, you can use any type or size wire that you have. A bad connection will cause noise issues.

What if my turntable doesn’t have a ground?

Can you ground a turntable to a preamp?

For the best turntable performance, two ground wires are often recommended in a turntable, external preamp setup. One ground wire would connect from the turntable to the preamp, the other from the preamp to the speakers or amplifier.

How long can a turntable ground wire be?

As others have mentioned there is no limit. For two feet anything you have is okay. This is not a current or signal carrying wire. The length of the audio cables is far more important, but a two feet you shouldn’t have any problem.

Do you need ground wire for a Phono turntable?

Phono cartridges can be grounded by their own pin outs into the RCA connectors or to the headshell and through the tonearm and into the turntable. Adding a ground wire to such a system creates a ground loop. Click to expand… The distinction that needs to be made here is between signal ground and chassis ground.

Why does my turntable not have a ground loop?

The only thing that makes a difference in whether you actually have to ground your turntable, is if you have an amplifier with a built in phonos preamp. A ground loop is the result of a lack of grounding. More scientifically, it’s the result of the chassis connections not having the same ground potential or voltage.

Is there a ground connection for a Thorens turntable?

So if the Thorens originally was wired with a ground connection for the whole turntable via right signal wire (often turntables have the ground connection for these mechanical parts tied to signal ground with no separate wire) and someone added a separate ground connection without changing the original wiring scheme, well, could result in a loop.

What is the ground hum on a turntable?

The ground loop hum is 120 hertz, while the other is 60 hertz. You’ll have to rule out the 60 hertz hum to know whether it is time to get your hands mildly dirty and ground your turntable. You’re probably thinking this sounds far too scientific and only expert can distinguish between the two hums.

What happens if you dont connect ground wire to turntable?

Not connecting the ground wire will result in an unpleasant buzzing. If no ground wire is present on your turntable, you may not need to worry about it, but always look to make sure no one’s amputated or unplugged it. Older stereos have a marked connection point for this wire.

Can a phono cartridge be grounded on a turntable?

Phono cartridges can be grounded by their own pin outs into the RCA connectors or to the headshell and through the tonearm and into the turntable. Adding a ground wire to such a system creates a ground loop.

Why do I need ground wire on my tonearm?

Consider, that there is a reason that there is a ground screw on the phono preamp or receiver. The Pinhead likes this. My tonearm ground wire is fastened to the grounding post on my phonostage. That’s what it’s there for and what it’s designed to address.
