Does it matter how speaker wires are connected?

Speaker wire is made of two separate cables that need to be connected to the positive and negative connectors on the amplifier and speaker. It doesn’t matter which way round you connect the wires – even if the wire is marked with a plus and minus.

What happens if you switch positive and negative wires?

Reversing the polarity in a circuit can ruin the power source or even cause an explosion. Connecting the wrong wires, like using a positive wire when it should be a negative wire, can also fry the wires themselves.

How can you tell positive and negative wires?

If you have a wire where both sides are the same color, which is typically copper, the strand that has a grooved texture is the negative wire. Run your fingers along the wire to determine which side has the ribbing. Feel the other wire which is smooth. This is your positive wire.

What happens when speaker wires are connected to the wrong terminals?

What happens when a speaker’s wires are hooked up to the wrong terminals: + is connected to – and vice versa. Does the sound get degraded, is there feedback?

What to do if you connect a speaker the wrong way?

Attach the wire to one side of a speaker cable and put the multi meter probe on the other end, then check which of the two wires at the far end completes the circuit.

Does it matter if your car speakers are wired the wrong way?

If you aren’t sure on the sound just play with the faders on the stero to listen to all the speakers on their own and then all together. It does matter. If it’s a stereo set up then you could end up with R & L out of phase. This’ll affect stereo staging and volume.

What happens if a light switch is wired up wrong?

If a light switch is wired up wrongly, a short circuit may takes place if you give phase and neutral to the switch terminals. Always connect neutral wire to the one terminal of the light and phase to the one terminal of the switch and off wire to the other terminal of the switch to the light other terminal.

What happens if your speakers are wired the wrong way?

If it’s a stereo set up then you could end up with R & L out of phase. This’ll affect stereo staging and volume. You can test it pretty easily using a meter. One way would be to disconnect the wires at the amp and speaker ends and just test the conductivity of one of the conductors.

What should I do if my speaker is not working?

To do this you need to disconnect the speaker wires from the amplifier (while still connected to a speaker) and then get a 1.5-volt battery. Touch the plus end of the wire to the plus end of the battery. If the speaker and wires are working you will hear a “pop” sound from the speaker. Do this only for a short time.

Why are my speakers not playing on my TV?

If it still does not work, switch the wires with the set of speakers that does work. If the good set of speakers suddenly does not play then it is a faulty speaker wire.
