Does positive and negative matter on speaker wires?

No. Speakers do not care about the polarity of the connection. On that same not neither do your ears. The positive and negative terminals are only there as a reference so you can connect multiple speakers in the same polarity.

What happens if positive and negative speaker wires touch?

Current always flows from the positive side to negative the negative side of a circuit. When these two wires touch, it leads to the short-circuiting of the source supplying current to these wires. How do you hook up a speaker to a speaker system?
