How do I know if my tube amp is blown?
Crackling, squeals and feedback, excessive noise and muddiness or low output are all evidence of tube problems. Power tubes. The two main symptoms of a power tube problem are a blown fuse or a tube that begins to glow cherry red. Either are typically indicative of a power tube failure.
How do I know if my amp transformer is bad?
A loss of gain at the frequency extremes, more hum than you have noticed in the past, strange noises that may come and go, low power output, tone that’s just not “right” — these are signs that the amp is really in need of some maintenance.
Why does amp lose volume?
As soon as you start to hear the sound is dropping-out, you need to turn off and unplug your amp. Let it sit for like 10 minutes, so all the juice is out of the wires. If you heard crackling-popping sounds, feedback, or microphonic’ sounds, that’s a sign that some tube is bad.
Can you repair a vacuum tube?
Like Curt said, some tubes can be repaired by resoldering the pins. Also, globe type tubes sometimes developed internal shorts because of the elements not being well supported. Sometimes these can be repaired by whacking them against a surface to realign the elements.

You can expect a conventional amplifier tube to have a service life ranging up to 10,000 hours. Tubes with military specifications are built to last up to 100,000 hours.
How do you troubleshoot an amplifier?

- Make sure the amp is turning on, with the above steps.
- Connect a new set of RCAs.
- Attach an external speaker to the system.
- Check the amp’s crossovers and settings.
- If your amp has a master and slave setting, make sure you have it set as a master, unless it’s connected to another amp.
Why did my amp burn out?
Most of the time, low-impedance loads are the primary cause of blowing out a channel or possible speaker failure. Because of the speakers I use, (Electrostatics, Planar Magnetic, Ribbons), the use of a tube amp that will drive these has pretty much been out of my financial reach, (I have owned some really nice tube amps, however). What should I do if my amp is not working?
Testing Diodes. If the amp is completely silent (no speaker hum or hiss at all) then the problem can be just about anywhere in the amp but you should suspect a bad tube, blown fuse or the power supply in that order. Try a new rectifier tube.

If the amp is still dead move on to the Going Inside the Chassis section. If the amp is blowing fuses at power up replace the fuse and plug the amp into a light bulb current limiter and power it up. A light bulb limiter allows you to power up a new or problem amp and limit damage to the amp from miswiring or other defects.

If everything you know about tube amps came from the internet, you might want to prepare for a shock. You probably don’t need new tubes. You don’t need new transformers. You might not need new capacitors. I know you read a book that said otherwise, but the book is wrong.
