This Pioneer RT-1011L reel to reel tape deck is in pretty rough shape. A lot of different issues to look at. The reel on the take up motor would not come off. The reel locking mechanism was bent. I finally wiggled it off.

Can you substitute capstan flywheels for pioneer rt-909?
We have found no correct / adequate substitute unfortunately) – NOW SOLD OUT (Without these, the Pioneer RT-909 Reel to Reel Capstan flywheels will ‘scrape / drag’ on the motor mount thrust plate. Metal ball bearings transfer too much mechanical noise for a tape deck of this caliber unless you use a Teflon bearing surface on the ‘thrust plate’.
Which is better Pioneer rt909 or Akai gx747?
The low end bass response of the RT909 does beat out Akai’s GX747 and Teac’s X2000R both by quite a margin, considering your equalizer and speaker are rated to pick up lows that low, and did NOT have any distortion either at that low a frequency, so this unit has the lowest lows of all the reel units I’ve had here, the highs are GOOD too.
