How much power does a 300B se amplifier need?
I experimented over the years with several triode-strapped frame grid pentodes, triodes and DHTs for the purpose. In my design, the 300B with a 3.3KΩ OPT will need about 150Vpp to deliver the maximum output power rated at about 8W. The driver therefore, needs to be able to provide 150 to 200Vpp comfortably at very low distortion.
Why is the 300B amplifier not a good amplifier?
Mainly because the output transformer isn’t optimal for the amplifier due to cost compromise decisions and because the driver has to be able to push the 300B to its full swing and many of the drivers implemented are poorly designed to achieve very low distortion at maximum swing (e.g. 150 or 200Vpp).
How many Watts Does a 300B triode amplifier produce?
The output stage is a SE 300B triode and the maximum power output is about 8 Watts per channel. A pair of reasonably sensitive (>91 dB/1W/1m) loudspeakers will be required with this 300B SET amplifier.
What kind of Transformers do I need for a 300B amplifier?
Specifically recommended in the circuit notes was that premium output transformers and components be used for the 300B amplifier build. For this SE 300B triode tube amplifier build I have used premium parts throughout, Lundahl audio output transformers and a DIY chassis.
Where do they make the 300B audio tubes?
The European Audio Team has their own factory in the Czech Republic, and recently, they’ve started production on the famed 300B, providing tubes that are a clear cut above the mass-produced items that are available, bridging the gap between NOS and NEW.
Are there any 300B amps on the market?
Oh well. Today, the 300B amps have had a bit of a resurgence (and to some, they never went away – just like vinyl) but there are no incredible tubes to power them with. Having listened to more than my share of the current 300Bs, most manufacturers have settled on Electro Harmonix or JJ, because they are available.
What’s the life of a Nos 300B tube?
But don’t expect the 50,000-hour tube life of the NOS WE’s. Nope, these are 5,000 hour tubes on a good day. Most manufacturers have voiced around the current tubes, but that only goes so far. If you have the chance to experience the vintage 300Bs, you’ll freak out.
How much does a vintage 300B amplifier cost?
If you have the chance to experience the vintage 300Bs, you’ll freak out. The vintage WE’s are so smooth, extended, and dynamic, you’ll swear you’re listening to an entirely different amplifier. However, with these tubes going as high as $6,000 a pair for an amazing set.
