How tall can eastern hemlock trees be before they die?
The ENTS takes great pride in finding and documenting the maximum height of eastern trees. For the hemlocks, it would be only a few years until all in my area were dead. It became my mission to prevent the eastern hemlock from dying without proper acknowledgment and accurate documentation.
Why does my hemlock tree have no leaves?
Assuming the trees have sufficient moisture and nutrition, and no obvious insect problems, this is probably due to environmental factors. Most commonly it is because the lower branches are denied sufficient light by nearby plants that have grown large and shade them.
What kind of root system does eastern hemlock have?
Rooting Habit- To a great extent, site conditions determine the rooting habits of eastern hemlock. When the watertable is near the surface, root systems are shallow. On better drained sites, deeper rooting patterns may be observed. Reaction to Competition- Eastern hemlock is the most shade tolerant of all tree species (3,15,35).
Where are the adelgids on a hemlock tree?
Adelgids are easily identified by deposits of white, cotton-like masses on the underside of Hemlock needles. Adelgids feed on the sap at the base of Hemlock needles primarily on new twig growth. They usually start on the lower branches. Needles turn gray then yellow and then drop off.

Why are there mites on my hemlock tree?
A generous mulched area under them will reduce the competition. Trees under stress from the chronic light, water, and nutrient deprivation are vulnerable to pest insects such as mites and scale that zero in on unhappy plants.
