How to troubleshoot a Philips CD 104 drive?

The “Servicing the Philips CD 104” is a nice collection of useful tips for troubleshooting. (2,8MB!) dindiki offers information on the topic “maintaining the CDM-1 drive”. René Vos (CD-94 blog) collected tons of information around the CDM-1 drive.

Why does my CD player not read CDS?

It seems to me that the drive wheel is either too slippery to rotate the cd or that it does not rise up and push against the cd hard enough. What does OPC error mean on Philips CD recorder?

Just try it if you can. Unfortunitly the worst case is that the laser is out of alingment. If that is it, it would be better just to buy a new machine at that point. In most, however, the “OPC ERROR” means that the machine dose not reconize the blank media that you have put in it. It does NOT mean you have a miss-alinment with the laser.

Can a Philips 785 burn to a CD?

The first two days that is! I early on burned to CD-RW first, then just used the CD->CD mode to copy the finished disk after I was happy with the results on the CD-RW – that really works! I have a Philips 785 and the only CD-RW discs that would work on it were Memorex and Maxell.
