Is it possible to identify a mushroom from a picture?

Unfortunately, identifying mushrooms from just a picture and a brief description can be very difficult. Since there are so many factors to consider, I built this page to show beginners the thought process associated with identifying different types of mushrooms. There are some crucial factors to observe besides just color and size.

What kind of mushrooms are cap and stalk?

These mushrooms are all fleshy, and most are popular edibles. A number of these mushrooms are trumpet- or vase-shaped, including the BLACK TRUMPET. Boletes BOLETES are fleshy, terrestrial cap-and-stalk mushrooms but instead of gills beneath their caps, they have a layer of downward-pointing tubes.

How did the waxcap mushroom get its name?

Hygrocybe chlorophana got the name “waxcap” because of its yellow cap that is always moist and looks like has been covered in wax. On the underside, it has broad and fairly spaced gills. The Hygrocybe genus includes several species of waxcap mushrooms, but not all of them are yellow.
