Why is the top light on but not the bottom light on?

If not, better press and hold the pair button longer, for about 10 seconds, on both adapters. Then press the pair button again for 1 sec to pair them.

Why does the mute button light not go off?

No. The sounds are working perfectly. the red led light indicating mute just wont go off. Looks to be a hardware or some sensor switch is not working properly from the motherboard side. I would just ignore it then since it is completely working at this point. I guess so.
