What are the basic NEC code rules and design practice?

BASIC NEC CODE RULES AND DESIGN PRACTICE Wire Ampacity and Size 1. Maximum loading for any branch circuit is 80% of rating of circuit for ampacity of wire for any load. NEC 220-2, use NEC 310-16 for ampacity. This applies to not more than 3 phase conductors in 1 conduit. Warning

How many amps does a NEC 310-16 wire have?

Use NEC 310-16, 75°C, THW, wire #4 wire has 85 amps Use #4 2 #4 and, 1 #4 ground Circuit Breaker Sizing CB = Load = 65.2 Amp = 81.5 Amp .8 .8 Next higher CB size is 90 Amp.

Why was conductor sizing added to the NEC?

These important Code rules were added to the 1993 and 1996 NEC and are often overlooked. The purpose of these new rules are to insure that the heat generated on the equipment terminals can be properly dissipated without damaging the conductors.

How big of a circuit breaker do I need for a 14 gauge wire?

NEC table 310-16 lists a maximum ampacity for 14, 12 and 10 gauge wires, which is higher than the allowed circuit breaker size. The maximum size circuit breakers are 15, 20 and 30 amperes for 14, 12 and 10 gauge wire, respectively. After derating wires, you must still adhere to the maximum circuit breaker size.

What are the standard breaker sizes for NEC?

Standard breaker sizes are listed Page 70-74, 240-6 NEC Conduit Sizing 1. After circuits have been derated to get proper wire size use Table 3A if wires are all same size. Use Page 70-57″9, or Tables 4 and 5 if wires are all different size.
