What is a PVR function on a TV?

A PVR stands for Personal Video Recorder, sometimes also called the DVR Digital Video Recorder. In essence, it’s a sophisticated set-top box with recording capability as well as pause, rewind, stop, or fast-forward a recorded program. The PVR is basically the modern-day equivalent of the VCR.

Can I buy a PVR for my TV?

Most cable and television packages include a rental PVR that you can upgrade for nominal fees. Purchasing your own PVR frees you from monthly costs, but monthly rentals are your provider’s responsibility if they break.

Can a PVR be used as a set top box?

By now, most people are familiar with the concept of a set top box which is capable of recording programming for you.
