What was the house like in the 1970s?

What was an uninspiring 1970s house has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis. It all started when Rachael and Dan Gardner connected with an innovative architect who was keen to push the boundaries of design.

When did Rachael and Chris build their house?

The couple set about their search for the perfect house, their first together, back in 2009. Keen to purchase something equidistant from their respective places of work, Rachael went to view this property in Winchester in spring that year. Construction method Extension was built from steel frame and blockwork, with render finish.

How did they change the layout of the House?

‘He also gave us advice on how to bring more light into the kitchen extension.’ The couple created a small utility room adjoining the kitchen and also repositioned the back doors to give easy access to the garden. Other work to the layout included moving the cloakroom from the front of the house to a new location under the stairs.

How did this house get put on the market?

After the owners sold their previous house, they moved in with family so they would be in the best position when they began house hunting. ‘A friend of ours lived on this road, just three doors down,’ they say, ‘so we jumped at the chance when she told us that this house was about to go on the market.’

Is there going to be a 70s House re-boom?

In addition, the larger population — including designers — has the perspective to look back and appreciate the best of a style, and let go of the rest. The 70s housing re-boom is on a trajectory to start in earnest in about eight years… and leading edge design savants are already heading there.

What did they use to heat houses in the 1970’s?

A central source of heat distributed heated air through rigid metal ducts which were wrapped in insulation. This was a big improvement over wall heaters found in most pre-1960 houses, but rigid ducts were difficult to install and were not sealed well. Another material may have been used in houses built in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.

Why is it so hard to move house?

But a great many people are unable to make that move – simply because they cannot face letting go of decades of accumulated belongings and all the attached memories.
