Why do I get no sound from my DVD player?

But I can’t seem to get any sound from my DVD player, connected to my TV via HDMI cable. I’ve tried different inputs on the TV, but the problem remains. Do you need speakers for a DVD player?

I was incorrect in the model number it’s DVD-1080P9, sorry. The speakers plug into the back of the DVD player. That is still just a dvd player only, no speakers/sound system involved with that model. Ok, I can’t find any information that pertains to the model that you appear to have, but we can work on this another way.
