Why is my Chinese Elm tree dying?

Anthracnose. Chinese elm is susceptible to anthracnose, which results in irregularly shaped black spots on its leaves. If the disease is allowed to progress, it eventually causes leaves to turn brown and drop from the tree. In a most serious case, the tree develops patches on its branches and trunk.

Chinese elm anthracnose, also called black leaf spot, is one of the most serious anthracnose diseases. Appearance: Irregular, black, tarlike spots on leaves, premature leaf drop, and twig dieback are common symptoms of Chinese elm anthracnose. More serious damage is caused by cankers on the limbs and trunk.

Is my Chinese Elm dying?

Chinese elms can handle indoor circumstances pretty good but they thrive best outdoors. You can check if it’s still alive by scratching the bark a bit. If the cambium layer is still green the tree isn’t dead (yet). If it’s brown, well you know it’s dead then.

Chinese elms with leaves turning yellow are likely infected with one of two devastating diseases. Dutch elm disease results in yellowing foliage caused by a fungal infection. This disease is spread to trees by native elm bark beetles, Hylurgopinus rufipes. Another appropriately named disease is elm yellows.

Will the leaves grow back on my bonsai?

If your indoor Bonsai is not receiving adequate sunlight, it is the main reason for its leaves dropping. Although insufficient light will not kill the plant right away, it will slow down the process of growth that may cause leaves to drop. Eventually, if you prune the tree, its leaves and branches won’t grow back.
